Justicia

The Justicia neighborhood is an administrative zone that contains both Chueca and Salesas. Chueca is the center of the gay commnuity in Madrid. You can read about that in our Chueca neighborhood overview. This Justicia neighborhood overview details the area around the Metro stop Alonso Martinez and Salesas, which is in the eastern part of the Justicia administrative zone.

Justicia arguably has the most beautiful architecture in all of Madrid. Its grand old buildings make you feel more like you are strolling through Paris, than Madrid. One of the most striking is the former Palace of Longoria, which was commissioned in 1902 by politician and financier Francisco Javier González Longoria. It has an extravagant art nouveau facade featuring intricate carvings of flowers, pretty women with long hair, leaves and scrollwork. It is situated at the corner of Calle Pelayo and Calle Fernando VI. A stroll down Fernando VI, towards Recoletos, takes you past Calle Hortaleza, which is one of the most coveted addresses in Madrid. On Hortaleza you can find many restaurants and shops such as Le Secret du Marais, which carries the best and broadest selection of perfumes in Madrid. It even carries coveted brands such as Amouage and Kilian.

If you keep walking on Fernando VI, you will see high end pastry shops, an elegant Thai restaurant called Krachai, a divine flower shop, edgy homeware stores and an Italian pizzeria with a wood fired oven (Grosso Napoletano), a Madrid outpost of Paris’s Maison Kayser and many other delightful shops and cafes.

As you approach Recoletos, you will encounter the grand, stately Convent of the Salesas Reales, or convent of Our Lady of the Visitation. The convent was founded in 1748 as a school and residence for young nobles. Now the neoclassical complex houses the Church of Santa Barbara and the Spanish Supreme Court. The neighborhood Justicia takes its name from the Supreme Court building which is situated here. The French Consulate and the Alliance Francaise are also in Salesas.

The Justicia neighborhood is ideal for people that want to live in a stylish environment and desire a myriad of shops and restaurants within walking distance of their doorstep.
